Objectives

The main objective of the project was educational activities for children and young people concerning the protection of biodiversity in the immediate vicinity, i.e. urban areas, and in the field of ecology and development of good habits. This objective was achieved through learning about the natural resources of the local environment, field activities, exchange of views and experiences, and "local visits" in partner cities. The second important objective was to establish cooperation between partner institutions and learn about the methodology of conducting environmental education in individual countries, develop common teaching methods and implement them in classes conducted in individual institutions. Another important aspect of the project was the development of key competences of students, especially those related to exact sciences and digital competences, educating students about responsibility for the natural environment as a common value and civic involvement in its protection. The planned activities were linked to the appropriate priorities, falling within the scope: "Environment and combating climate change".

Background

The project was aimed at raising the ecological awareness of students and society about the species diversity of the local environment and environmental education of students. The idea for the project was created by observing the needs of the local environment of our school, located in the highly urbanized center of Gliwice. This environment is poor in terms of the diversity of birds and pollinating insects. For years, our institution has been carrying out activities aimed at increasing biodiversity (including by establishing a mini botanical garden) and the project was part of this concept of activities. In addition, we observed a low level of knowledge of students and local residents about the species of plants and animals occurring in their immediate surroundings or the importance of pollinating insects. Our partner schools identified similar needs in their institutions. The ecological awareness of children and youth in these institutions was also quite low. These schools were also located in the center of the city of Laterza in Italy and Ankara in Turkey, which gave comparable experiences of all institutions (limited local biodiversity, small number of green areas, heavily built-up area).
