The GatewayCrafts project aimed to tackle challenges in small-scale manufacturing and arts and crafts by promoting sustainable production, enabling generational transition, and bridging geographic and social gaps. The project focused on making technical knowledge accessible in remote areas, advocating for eco-friendly practices, and attracting younger audiences through innovative digital learning tools. By developing two online courses, a best practices workbook, and adapting content for social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, GatewayCrafts aimed to deliver decentralized, high-quality education. The initiative combined structured e-learning with informal, community-driven learning to empower learners, support vocational education providers, and highlight the value and sustainability of crafts, ensuring inclusivity and relevance for modern audiences.
We developed the GatewayCrafts Project to address pressing challenges in the arts and crafts and small-scale manufacturing sectors, focusing on generational transition, sustainable production, and accessibility to technical knowledge in remote areas. Our aim was to modernize vocational education and training (VET) through digital transformation, making these fields more appealing and relevant to younger professionals. The project tackled generational transition by facilitating knowledge transfer to younger demographics through innovative strategies, including social media-based learning. We championed sustainable practices to ensure that sector growth aligned with environmental goals, promoting eco-friendly production techniques. To bridge gaps in accessibility, we utilized digital platforms to deliver technical knowledge to rural and remote areas, ensuring that educational resources were available to all. Additionally, we developed advanced digital learning tools designed to engage contemporary audiences and foster collaboration within the community. By addressing these interconnected challenges, GatewayCrafts created a foundation for a vibrant, sustainable future for the sector.
