Objectives

The covid-19 pandemic was a stark reminder of the situation needing equity, inclusion, and solidarity. The globe practiced the importance of trust between people and communities. There was and still a need for increased tolerance and solidarity for other cultures to prevent discrimination, which often led to social exclusion accompanied by increased violence, resulting in wars and conflicts. Research showed that racism and xenophobia were attitudes and behavior largely driven by fear and ignorance. At this point, together with our partner organizations, we decided to use the expression of art to foster intercultural dialogue and mutual respect. Because art influenced society by changing opinions, instilling values, and translating experiences across space and time. Art in this sense was communication; it allowed people from different cultures and different times to communicate with each other via images, sounds, and stories. Art was often a vehicle for social change. Art could be seen as a communication medium that we all understood, and via art (such as paintings, songs, theater plays, and music), many different cultures and nations could interact with one another without using words. We chose to tie the theme of discrimination with art because art had such a powerful ability to bring people from various cultures together. Young people expressed themselves through various artistic activities during the project, and there was also a community event in which participants prepared artistic performances to express their cultural heritage to local people, thereby increasing their cross-cultural awareness. Our goal in the ARTEMIS project was to increase mutual understanding and tolerance between young people from different cultures and fight against prejudices and discrimination. The objectives of the ARTEMIS project were: • to raise awareness among 31 participants from 5 program countries on the potential of art and cultural traditions as a means for inclusion and self-expression. • to promote mutual understanding, solidarity, and tolerance between young people from different cultural contexts and backgrounds through working in a multicultural environment and creating the atmosphere to share cultures and artistic expressions. • to promote active citizenship of young people in their society. • to promote opportunities for young people in the Erasmus+ program and non-formal education and hence motivate young people to take part in the projects in the future.
