The project Youth Hiking for Future aimed to inspire young people to increase their outdoor activities and discover the advantages of hiking in promoting both mental and physical well-being through non-formal education, outdoor instruction, and environmental awareness. The objectives of the project were following: - To encourage young people to think more about their mental and physical health and benefits of spending time outdoors - To increase the participation of young Europeans with fewer opportunities in physical activity by introducing them to hiking - To equip participants with tools to plan a day spent outdoors in nature - To raise awareness of eco-friendly outdoor activities and encourage their practice The objectives were successfully achieved by designing a series of workshops focused on environmentally-conscious and physically engaging activities. A group of young people spent one week in Low Tatras in Slovakia where they attended and implemented these workshops. These activities not only introduced young people to the concept of spending quality time in the great outdoors but also demonstrated how they could simultaneously improve their well-being. Workshops taught them how to navigate in nature while hiking, work with a map and compass, plan their own hike and also enabled them to participate in debates and conversations on topics such as environmental protection, green skills, outdoor eco-friendly activities. During these workshops they exchanged good practices and taught each other valuable knowledge and skills. By participating in these sessions, youngsters gained firsthand experience in embracing the natural world while taking positive steps towards improving their health and fitness. Workshops also ensured that young people developed healthy habits and understood the importance of outdoor physical activity and how to incorporate it more into their daily routines. During the youth exchange, young people developed a challenge called EUverest which is aimed at helping them to sustain in hiking by participating in at least 80 hikes longer than 8,849 m. After the youth exchange, youngsters organized their own hikes at home by applying skills they acquired during the YE and shared with us their experience on social media or in the common WhatsApp group, created for such purposes. This group is active to this day and serves as a common channel for all participants of YHIKE so they are able to motivate each other to go hiking and share their newest achievements
