In recent years, our societies faced serious challenges, including a pandemic, wars, economic crises, and migration issues. European Union (EU) countries responded by opening their doors to welcome over four million refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Solidarity became crucial in the face of an unprecedented global crisis. Therefore, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) emphasized that equality is a core EU value, asserting that people have the right to fair treatment, irrespective of their identities, beliefs, or lifestyles. As the number of refugees and migrants in our partner countries continued to rise, we developed an idea to utilize storytelling as a means to cultivate tolerance and empathy within local communities, with the goal of fostering better understanding. Our experiences and research, conducted in collaboration with partner organizations, indicated that stories, myths, tales, and literature can be powerful tools for initiating dialogue, promoting mutual understanding, and improving respect among diverse communities. With this perspective in mind, we embarked on the "Stories Uniting Us" Erasmus+ project, in partnership with five other organizations, with the shared aim of strengthening solidarity and social inclusion within our local communities. One of our primary objectives was to raise awareness about racism directed at refugees and immigrants. The project's goals included enhancing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competences of 36 participants from six organizations in the art of storytelling, with the ultimate aim of promoting solidarity, tolerance, and mutual respect. Furthermore, we intended to employ stories as a tool in the fight against racism and various other forms of discrimination directed at migrants and refugees. Our approach sought to enable participants to develop a deeper understanding of empathy and mutual respect and to establish intercultural dialogues through the sharing of stories, myths, tales, and legends. Additionally, we aimed to enhance the capacity of participating organizations to promote the social inclusion of migrants and refugees within local communities.
