Background

Democracy and Human Rigths on a wider macrolevel and civil courage on a microlevel are basic elements of the social life in Europe. Endangermants of democracy are widespread and last from the political level to the level of personal opinions. With our project we aim to sensitise the young participants for the basics of democracy on all levels as well as for civil courage in the very personal field. Civil courage is not just given by nature and democracy and its institutions are under constant fire. Especially we wanted to have a discussion about the European dimension. In the core focus there was the European Union as a guarantor of values, democracy and peace. Within this context we also wanted to share the Erasmus+ programm as a possibility for informal and non-formal learning-opportunities for everyone. Resistance is going together with the question of maintenance of democracy and Human Rights and ist endangerments. „Where there is an injustice, there has to be a resistance“ (Bertolt Brecht) was therefore the leading principle. It was the aim to go beyond the mere information and knowledge-base, but to work on different forms and possibilities of resistance too and to sensitise for them. Especially arts and its diverse forms of practise open a broad field of possibilities. We have chosen theatre and performance-arts and provided it to the young participants Work on the youth-exchange itself should be done by means of performative arts first of all. This is ensuring, that the work is done not only on a cognitive level, but on a physical and emotional level too – so the learning-effort goes deeper. The participating groups had to prepare a performance in advance. This should bring up, that everyone was already working on the topics. The pre-made performances should be shown to the public on a theatre-festival as a high-light of the youth-exchange. So, we wanted to enable an exchange, crossing the barriers of provenance and background-cultures for to open a possibility for an exchange in the fields of arts and cultures too. The face-to-face encounter of people from different origins and social living-contexts should bring up a reduction of prejudicies and a modification of stereotypes. Furthermore, the capability in talking English should be strengthened.
