Objectives

The primary project objective was for socially disadvantaged adolescents to gain awareness for environmental topics and educate them towards sustainability and how to use the 5R concept of zero waste. Many adolescents do not have an overview, neither are aware about the existing issue, nor how it might affect their future nor how they could act against it. In order to achieve a connection between the young generation and nature it is important to integrate them into it. Therefore the aim was that the camp takes place in a natural environment. This could be arranged by locating the camp in Balatonboglár. The content centrepiece was the concept of 5R in zero waste including the values reduce, refuse, recycle, rethink, and respect. To achieve profound results, we connect each principle with some activities and game-based learning methods. Additionally the research conducted in the camp helps to present successful practices and methods to trainers, social workers and pedagogists during a Multiplication Day (see activity 4) in order to spread the ideas on how to engage young people to fight against climate change. That way we can educate the youngsters directly over the camp and also indirectly over the participating trainers.

Background

The aim of this project was to empower adolescents to fight against climate change and thus educate them how they can protect their planet. The best way to do so is to let them integrate into nature through activities where they learn to respect and appreciate their own environment. Additionally, it is an effective method of teaching them the responsibility of conserving and protecting our planet. Collecting waste and recycling it, or composting are good and practical examples for youngsters on how to fight against climate change. Previous studies have shown that adolescents like doing these ecological activities in case the teacher/trainer also shows interest and engagement about environmental protection. That way one can provide new sustainable hobbies for the young people, and connect them to the environment. Additionally the project taught adolescents how to use nature in a good way so that they can also reduce waste (e.g. with teaching them collecting usable herbals). ÖJAB has a wealth of experience in EU projects, particularly in working with young people and in project management. On the other hand, Pressley Ridge Hungary (PRHU) treat traumas of disadvantaged adolescents with the principles of 6R by Bruce Perry.
