Objectives

Leuven 2023 was conceived and organised around the vision “Democracy through Diversity: Safeguarding a Secure and Innovative Europe”. The aim of this project was to bring together more than 200 young people from approximately 23 different European countries to meet and discuss topics questioning democracy, diversity, security and innovation with regards to the future of our society. The deterioration of the rule of law in some Member States of the European Union, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the introduction of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation throughout Europe are - among others - a threat to each of the aforementioned pillars of the project. The goal of the European Youth Parliament Belgium with such projects, is to empower the voices and opinions of young Europeans. It does so by providing the space and tools for the students to dive deeply into the subjects. EYP Belgium wanted to create a space for the youths to contribute to the solutions of today’s challenge. This was made possible through 3 defined objectives. The first one was for the participant to come up with proposals that would contribute to reinforce a democratic, diverse, secure and innovative Europe. Every EYP session‘s aim is for the students to come up, by the end of Committee Work, with their own ideas and solutions to solve current societal issues. As a result, all topics are centred and address challenges with regards to the vision of the session. All the resolutions created by the participants were regrouped in the Resolution Booklet of Leuven 2023. Among others, the students addressed the topics of the recent inflation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine and the responses given by the EU, and the critical situation of millions of climate refugees around Europe and how the EU can at the same tackle the challenges linked to climate change and develop safety and protection measures for those refugees. The second one was to directly engage young people with societal issues while actively using their problem-solving skills on those conflicting subjects. The different activities proposed during Committee Work are a way to spark curiosity among the young participants about political issues of our society while getting a fresh insight from a youth perspective on those challenges and possible solutions to solve them. The third objective was for the participants to gain soft skills and deeper knowledge on the topics addressed at the session through an informal learning experience. Thanks to all the activities organised by the Academic Team, the participants did not only gain awareness on crucial topics linked to the EU political agenda but livelong skills that can be use in their daily professional life: the ability to listen to someone else’s opinion without being in opposition, debating in front of a large audience, writing proposals and speeches in a formal and academic manner, … During the General Assembly, more than 20 speeches were given by the students to either raise concerns on ambitious points and contradictory allegations unclear to the rest of the assembly or to defend their own proposals and highlight the importance and urgency of certain topics. In addition, Leuven 2023 aimed to emphasise the importance of the issues discussed during the event by interacting with senior political and policy-making actors to facilitate and promote the results of Leuven 2023. Each committee had the chance to spend about an hour with an expert in the field of their subject in order to have an active discussion between generations to exchange opinions and ideas and gain a more precise knowledge of the subjects’ complexity.
