‘Stories Unfold’ was a project proposal that was brought together by Fabrika Kollektiv, and it was based on the dual concept of storytelling and social change. Storytelling can be defined as a multidisciplinary activity of writing, telling, or reading and it can be used as a means of expressing one’s feelings, personal stories and imagination, whilst also engaging the listener. Storytelling is indeed one of the oldest forms of expression, as they can be found in humanity’s very early stages, from cave drawings to oral traditions and archetypes. Through the use of non-formal education, we aimed to adapt the concept of storytelling into this educational program, with the fundamental aims being: -embracing diversity and acceptance, as well as creating a creative safespace -workshops specifically designed for group collaborations as well as workshops designed for introspection -enhance initiatives on a personal level, the participants will participate in the process of finalising a performance, an action which is extremely impactful for individuals, especially people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. -touch upon intersectional and perplexed social issues, raising concerns and becoming more socially and communally aware. -storytelling has therapeutic traits, as it can be used to resurface and heal older personal and generational traumas, as well as collective memory. The act of sharing is itself a form of therapy, but the same can be said about active listening and using our imagination to form fictional stories. The main focal points of the project included the art of storytelling and social change through different art forms and approaches, the fundamental ones being: theatre, creative writing, poetry, painting & visual arts, music and movement. This diversity in the methodology allowed us to use a plethora of activities and media which has consequently enhanced the involvement of the participants. It is of importance to state that the workshops and reflection groups were facilitated by the youth leaders with our coordination, and there was time and space for the participants to host some activities themselves. Taking into account the issues faced by youth with fewer opportunities, such as social, educational, financial and geographical difficulties, discrimination based on ethnicity for various reasons and barriers with inclusion in society, one of our main aims was to bring together particular youth who are residents of different European countries including; Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Poland and Italy. The program was carried out for 7 days (+2 travel days), between 01/12/2023 - 08/12/2023 in Pervolia Village, Larnaca District. Each partner organisation sent 5 participants and 1 youth leader/group representative. This project took into consideration the Sustainable Development Goals; Goal 16: peace, justice and strong institutions & Goal 10: Reduced inequalities, alongside the European Youth Goals including creating inclusive societies, encouraging space and participation for all and connecting the EU with youth, the project derived from our deep passion towards these subjects. We directly aimed to target some of their needs including increased self-esteem and confidence, the sense of initiative, active participation, sense of belonging, learning to learn. We aimed to create a safe space where acceptance, altruism, understanding and sharing were some of the key values. Within this space, participants were empowered by engaging in a variety of developmental activities and connected with each other, by being supported in their self-development, that lead to a heightened sense of oneness, by embracing cultural diversity, peace, inclusion, equality and to enhance the sense of initiative in their local communities. There was a focus on both individual and collective levels; supporting individual development and social change. The project also focused on providing new competencies to youth workers and youth leaders which was done through the use of non-formal education methodologies and tools with diverse and socially disadvantaged groups, especially young people with fewer opportunities. The ongoing pandemic has created a social gap and has affected the mental well-being on an individual level, and such mobilities like this one need to reconstruct some realities that were considered as given a year ago but now are not. Our objectives and activities were in accordance with the European values and Erasmus+ objectives as they included: -Focus on young people and needs -Alternative educational setting (non-formal & informal education) -Social inclusion, integrity; -Sense of initiative, leadership, empowerment, active participation -Peace and peer education, as a means of exchanging knowledge -Non-violent and peaceful communication -earning in non-formal contexts using the SEAL model -active participation -space for interaction, sharing of ideas, reflections
