The project intended to build on the outcomes of the Conference on the Future of Europe, the results of consultations within the framework of the 9th cycle of the EU Youth Dialogue and insights gleaned from young people's participation in various activities during the European Year of Youth. It acknowledged the significant changes that had occurred in the lives of young Europeans. Therefore, our primary aim was to address the specific needs and perspectives of young people, as voiced in the dialogue, consultations, and activities. This included focusing on youth participation, democratic values, transparency, democracy, elections, and decision-making processes. The project sought to enhance the impact of policy decisions on young people by addressing their cross-sectoral needs and fostering intersectoral collaboration. Furthermore, through the planned activities, we aspired to foster a sense of belonging to the European project and to encourage young people to exercise their voting rights in both national and European Parliament elections in 2024. Through the EU Youth Dialogue process and the promotion of youth participation, we aimed to empower young people to actively engage in the democratic life of their communities by taking advantage of the tools offered to them. The project aimed to promote the active participation of young people in democratic life in Europe and their meaningful interaction with decision-makers. Through the implemented activities, we provided a safe space for non-formal education with the aim of facilitating the expression of young people's views and concerns. This enabled them to explore the reasons behind disengagement and absenteeism from elections, analyze these issues, and develop solutions and recommendations to empower themselves and strengthen their participation in democracy. Moreover, participants in the project had the opportunity to exchange views and share best practices, concerns, and potential obstacles to youth participation. Thus, by identifying challenges and success factors, they developed solutions and recommendations on how to enhance youth participation at local, national and European levels beginning with the 2024 European elections. Furthermore, young people were actively engaged in the democratic life of Cyprus through their participation in debates on topics aligned with the European Youth Strategy, the National Youth Strategy and the Youth Goals (YG), specifically YG1 ‘’ Connecting EU with Youth ‘’, YG3 ‘’ Inclusive Societies ‘’, YG9 ‘’ Space and Participation for All’ and their dialogue mechanisms. They were also engaged in a dialogue with policymakers, specifically the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Dr. Costas Mavrides, Dr. Niyazi Kızılyürek, and Mr. Loucas Fourlas; the head of the European Parliament office in Cyprus, Mr. Andreas Kettis; the Head of the European Commission’s Representation in Cyprus, Ms. Myrto Zamparta; the national Citizens’ representative in the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), Mr. Andonis Kouras; and the Vice-President of the European Youth Forum, Ms. Christiana Xenofontos. Through the discussions, participants were able to identify existing participatory mechanisms at local, national and European levels, assess key elements contributing to their success, and recognize areas for improvement. They deepen their understanding of the European Youth Strategy, the National Youth Strategy, and the Youth Goals, as well as civil and social dialogue mechanisms and decision-making processes. As a result of the project, participants developed transferable skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and creativity. After the mobility, CYC transformed the ideas into a policy paper that was voted upon during our General Assembly in November 2023. In this way, this policy paper became the official policy paper submitted by the CYC and used for policymaking and advocacy. Before its confirmation, CYC members were briefed on the project outcomes and were invited to provide feedback based on their experiences as youth organizations. Therefore, all members of the CYC (61) were informed about the project results, and they were also able to provide feedback on the policy paper of the project according to their experience as youth organizations. Additionally, post-project CYC will disseminate the project results and outcomes to the relevant stakeholders and policymakers, advocating for the adoption of young people’s suggestions into agendas related to youth participation and broader youth issues at local and national levels.
