Objectives

The project focused on the themes of identity and cultural differences. They dealt with questions about the determinations of their own identity and thus about very individual differences and commonalities far beyond national affiliations. The participants dealt with deviations from the “normal” (what is normal?), with diversity, with “minorities” (what is a minority?). They researched the notions of different sexual orientation, the meaning of “ethnic” origin, the assumptions about refugees from different regions of the world, looked at the religious rituals of different religions and how to deal with deviating ideas about life. Living conditions of ‘minorities’ could be perceived, different attitudes and values discussed and own attitudes reflected. What follows from being somehow “different”? How is diversity handled in Italy, Poland, Greece, Spain and Germany? We wanted to facilitate orientation in spheres of social debate (e. g. sexual orientation, gender debate, migration, disability, refugees, religion, ‘cultural appropriation’, etc. ), to open our eyes to the perspectives of people who are ‘somehow different’ and to promote openness and tolerant interest instead of (pre-)fast positioning, constructive discussion instead of cancel-culture. Realising this project we wanted to raise awareness of the potential of diversity, to support a change of perspective, to help reduce fears of unfamiliar or strange moments, encounters, situations, to promote understanding of the viewpoints of others, to reflect on “culture”, “identity” and “cultural differences” and to promote one’s own - reflected - positions, to reflect on intercultural conflict situations and to clarify the need and potential of communicative exchange.
