Last couple years were overfilled with huge events, challenging democratic principles and overall well-being of society. Each of these events touched Europe and has its impact. It raises discussions, different opinions and looks for support. Each of us should be aware of these events, should be able to support the citizens close to us, should analyse, how each of us would behave in analogous situations and should be able to find inner strength to fight for the justice we believe in. It is necessary to equip youngsters with democratic spirit, competence of active citizenship and willingness to engage into civic and social life. There are democratic issues and recent history to discuss in each of participating countries - Lithuania and its "heritage" of communistic regime, Romania and their fight for democracy since 1990, Germany and Fall of the Berlin Wall, Spain and their path out of dictatorship. Every country has its democratic wounds and what we need is further discussion and active civic spirit of its citizens. Spain, after Franco's dictatorship has had a tradition in which democracy has been based on 2 politics parties, one from the right and one from the left. Although it has existed always more than 2 parties, these 2 have been the only well represented in the Spanish government. Since 2016, more parties from the left and from the right, had raised and have been a useful competence for those 2 parties. We think that point, in 2016 was a crucial moment for democracy in Spain. More people was interested on politics because there was more than 2 choices and more people became more represented by politics. In fact, last European Elections had a 60.73% of participation versus 43.81% in 2014, 44.81% in 2009 or 45.14% in 2004. As people is now much more active in politics, is necessary to know how to be critical, to compare information or to really know what each party want for their community. It's the main reason why partners wanted to send people from Spain to the project and see topic's relevance. It's very important to be a democratic society, but also to know how to be a good democratic citizen in order to have a useful democracy. Lithuania, although not examplary in Parliamentary elections (47,8% in 2020) shows inspiring strength and unity in times of crisis and insecure events. In 1991 January 13th Lithuanians showed the power of unity while fighting for their freedom, now they provide unconditional support for Ukraine to defend their freedom and their democratic values. They have showed that small contributions and action can make a great difference. Each person matters. Active citizenship and that civic spirit is the power which gives citizens strength to go and fight for the things which they believe in. To sum up all various cases and actualities – the citizens are the ones who can set country free from the pressure of dictators to democratic revolution. Only citizens can show that they actually want and need and what needs should be represented by government’s decisions. If citizens engage, they can form the country and the system which they want to live in. Goal of the project was: Raise awareness of participation in democratic life and encourage active engagement in civic and social processes of 40 participants aged 15 – 26 years by arranging a youth exchange from 23rd of August till 2nd of September, 2023 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Objectives: 1. To learn about and analyse core recent democratic events; 2 To foster actions and debates regarding civic issues for 40 participants and their local communities; 3. To promote active participation in civic life and democratic processes for 40 participants and their local communities. Project’s topic and goals are related to Erasmus+ and follow its priorities as they are enhancing active citizenship and awareness and participation in democratic life.
