Objectives

The project "Stand up and speak out" was determined to transform the obstacle into an opportunity for 42 participants from six program countries, encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones and dive into the unknown. It gave them the skills to present themselves and stand for what they cared about through a good speech. The project brought together young people from remote and rural areas, and through a variety of different daily activities, challenges, workshops, events, provided participants the opportunity to learn how to make their voices heard in any circumstances through a creative, interactive, and open-minded approach. This led to them discovering their own potential to be good public speakers and developing a desire for self-improvement. The project also contributed to developing their independence and confidence to feel secure in new surroundings and with people they had never met before, which was crucial. The main objectives of the project were: Raising awareness about the value of public speaking as a tool for boosting self-confidence, improving communication, and assessing participants' abilities. Helping participants develop their leadership skills by allowing them to plan and lead sessions in which other participants could learn about public speaking methods in their own countries. Gaining experience, knowledge, and good practice of constructive analysis of their own and others' presentations, basic rules of speech, visualizing, and the use of informational communicational technologies during the presentation. Improving participants' knowledge of the Erasmus+ program and inspiring young people to become involved and step out of their comfort zones. Improving teamwork and intercultural skills, mainly by providing an opportunity to work in a multicultural setting. Increasing participants' communication skills by allowing them to work on creating campaigns raising awareness for leadership. One of the greatest fears that held young people back from growing and achieving their full potential was the fear of speaking in public. Whether giving a short presentation in school or telling a story at the dining table, something about being in front of a group of people triggered an almost panic-like reaction. But this fear had to be addressed; otherwise, that irrational dread could throw roadblocks to young people's personal and professional development. According to Statistic Brain, 74% of people suffered from glossophobia (fear of public speaking). This could contribute to the number of young adults who did not spend the time and effort to develop the ability to speak publicly and also did not find themselves with opportunities to develop their skills. Our conclusion from the implementation of this youth exchange was that while for young people living in more urban areas, it was easier to improve their communication and public speaking skills, for the youth of rural areas, with no to limited contact with international peers, this fear often remained untackled. Therefore, providing a unique learning opportunity was crucial for developing young people in rural areas.
