The Team-Up to Up-Cycle project has put an emphasis on advocating the behavioural shift towards sustainable production and consumption in the context of the sustainable development and circular economy. The project hereby pursues to contribute to the climate-neutral and resource-efficient economic model that will eventually result in substantial decrease of the anthropogenic impact on the environment which goes in line with the provisions of the Communication on the European Green Deal [EC 2019]. Working towards this goal, the Circular Economy Action Plan approved in 2020, and the following actions taken such as rules on packaging & waste and the “right to repair”, envisage, among others, to bring the material footprint for the EU citizens to a lower level. One of the key targets is the share of the recycled waste that is set to 55% by 2025, and to 60% by 2030. In order to incarnate this plan, a wide social consensus is necessary. Public awareness and active participation on individual level is of the essence. Therefore, interpretation of the concepts of the circular economy to the young people as one of the key groups that should bear this responsibility has been set to be one of the primary targets of the youth exchange. Delivery of pertinent knowledge and skills was an essential aspect to reach this goal. Ranging from insights in major environmental challenges, circular economy fundamentals to competences in waste management and reduction, types of waste material and corresponding reuse and recycling methods, the knowledge offered during the Team-Up to Up-Cycle project helped to build a solid foundation. Likewise, practical skills related to reuse and recycling of paper and plastic waste and production of secondary products were covered. By these means, active engagement of youth in the related processes was stimulated. Empowerment of the young people as key decision makers and future leaders was embedded in the project logic enabling them to define personal standpoint and to take an action in social and entrepreneurial domains. This was underpinned by analysis of social and entrepreneurial initiatives with the focus on the waste management. The following objectives were defined and for the Team-Up to Up-Cycle Project: - Raise awareness of the youth about global environmental issues, as well as provide key information on EU goals and strategies regarding transition to green economy and waste reduction. - Give insights about best practices of waste management on the communal level and beyond. - Promote the sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle and introduce an entire gamut of waste reduction measures on an individual level. - Explain different business models based on waste material recycling and provide insights about small scale business opportunities in this field. - Impart applied skills for paper and plastic waste reuse and recycling that can be used as a foundation for green entrepreneurship. - Encourage participants’ involvement in social dialog, youth activism and decision-making processes to advocate sustainable environmental practices. - Enhance digital skills of participants by introducing various digital tools and technologies, - Introduce Erasmus+ Programme and other EU platforms and opportunities for youth. To collaborate on this topic the Team-Up to Up-Cycle” project brought together representatives 8 countries including Germany, Latvia, Austria, Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey and Portugal. The total number of participants was 40 with each country represented by 4 participants and 1 group leader. The youth exchange was organised in town of Dahnsdorf in Brandenburg region of Germany and lasted ten days.
