The primary aim of our Responsible Media Literacy (REAM) project was to address the critical issue of media literacy among young people in Europe. We recognized the pervasive influence of media on youth and the potential negative consequences of their inability to discern between accurate information and misinformation. Therefore, our overarching goal was to empower young individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the media landscape responsibly and critically. Hence, we engaged young people in critical evaluation of the media, enlightened them on making informed decisions, and contributing positively to media discourse in their communities and beyond. The specific objectives of our project were as follows: 1. Exposing youths to information and knowledge sources on the internet. We aimed to provide participants with access to diverse information sources available online, thereby expanding their understanding of different perspectives and topics. 2. Enlightening youths on types of media bias and how to identify them. We sought to educate participants about various forms of media bias, including political, commercial, and sensational biases, and equip them with the tools to recognize and critically evaluate biased information. 3. Engaging youths in critical analytical skills for meaningful discernment among multiple information sources and types on the internet. Our objective was to foster critical thinking skills among participants, enabling them to assess the credibility, reliability, and relevance of information encountered online. 4. Empowering youths for citizen journalism involving the creation and confident communication of news items. We aimed to empower participants to become active contributors to media discourse by training them in the principles of citizen journalism, including ethical reporting practices and effective communication strategies. 5. Equipping youths with required netiquette and appropriate media usage. Lastly, we aimed to promote responsible and ethical media usage among participants by educating them about online etiquette (netiquette) and promoting positive digital citizenship behaviours.
