Objectives

The motivation of the project centers on the recognition of climate change as not just an environmental issue, but a pressing human rights concern. This project arises from the understanding that climate change, exacerbated by human activities since the Industrial Revolution, is leading to severe environmental and societal impacts. These include increased temperatures, melting glaciers, ocean warming, soil dryness, forest fires, and loss of ecosystems. Such changes pose a direct threat to fundamental human rights, such as the right to life, health, water, environment, food, and shelter. The project acknowledges the disproportionate effects of climate change on various social groups and emphasizes the need for urgent action to address these human rights issues. The project’s goals include raising awareness among young people about the climate crisis, its causes, consequences, and its intersection with human rights issues. This approach seeks to motivate individuals and policymakers towards effective climate action, emphasizing the role of human rights in framing and responding to the climate crisis. Climate change is not a phenomenon that can be read only through its effects on the ecological environment, the climate crisis is also a human rights issue. The enormous destruction that it will create and is creating for humanity requires that this problem be addressed urgently. Directly due to environmental events such as hurricanes, storms, floods and tornadoes that occur as a result of climate change; Human rights are adversely affected by indirect events such as difficult access to clean water, arid soils, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. The right to life, the right to health, the right to water, the right to the environment, the right to food, the right to shelter are among the most affected human rights issues. On the other hand, while 400 thousand people die annually due to climate change, it is predicted that this number will approach 700 thousand in 2030. According to the World Health Organization, between 2030 and 2050, 95 thousand children will die due to malnutrition and 38 thousand people will die due to excessive heat due to climate change. Climate migrants are increasing as a result of unfavorable climatic conditions, the destruction of agricultural lands, and the flooding of cities due to rising sea levels. It is a predictable result that humanity is facing the danger of famine as a result of the agricultural lands reaching the point where they cannot meet the needs. For all these reasons, the climate crisis; The existing economic, social and cultural inequalities will deepen even more. The climate crisis will have more pronounced effects for some groups of people. Combating the climate crisis will also prevent human rights violations caused by climate change. This rights-based approach is also an important claimability against decision makers; It provides more motivation to people in terms of individual effort. In this context, with the project we carried out, it was aimed to raise the awareness and sensitivity of young people about both the climate crisis and the human rights violations caused by this crisis. As our specific goals: 1. To raise awareness about the impact of climate change on human rights, especially among young people. 2. To engage and empower youth in discussions and actions related to climate change and human rights. 3. To influence policy by highlighting the human rights dimensions of climate change. 4. To foster collaboration among different groups and organizations working on climate change and human rights issues. 5. To develop the knowledge and skills of participants in understanding and addressing the intersection of climate change and human rights.
