Our planet Earth has been impacted enormously post the Industrial Revolution because of the over-exploitation of its resources to fulfill the never-ending human needs. The lifestyles of overconsumption that we as a society have gotten used to, are resulting in climate change and the destruction of our ecosystem. The debate around using less and limiting our consumption needs to be part of the public attention, and our project Wastecademy is an effort in this direction. The Project was focused on the idea of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. It is important to make young people the drivers of change and they must change their habits and lifestyles to have a safe future for all. It is high time that we learn from our mistakes and adapt according to the needs of our planet rather than changing our planet based on our needs. The project focused on making young participants aware of their daily consumption habits and tracking their impact on the Environment and carbon emissions. We made our participants realize that individual efforts matter and that huge change comes from making small changes in our habits. The sustainability of the planet and resource consumption is important to have a safe future for our species and we educated our participants, through various workshops using non-formal education methods on Upcycling, recycling, waste segregation, and reduction, and buying local products hence following the concept of sacred economy, to deliver our project goals and objectives. The project Wastecademy achieved following objectives: Provided status quo of the environmental realities in Europe to improve the background knowledge of the young participants on the topic of the project. Educated participants through practical workshops on how to reduce their impact on the environment and reduce their carbon footprint. Implemented activities on how to reuse things in their daily use that most people throw away. Successfully implemented workshops on upcycling from the materials that we use daily. Encouraged participants to reduce, and reuse the materials and goods in their daily life and also to create awareness about the same with their community. We implemented the activities on waste segregation and waste management and introduced them to the incentive system in Germany. We encouraged participants about a resource-efficient, green, and competitive low-carbon economy on the examples of the initiatives in Erfurt (e.g. Food Sharing, No Waste Cafe). We encouraged participants to follow a more sustainable lifestyle and the ways to do it in daily life.
