Objectives

"Mental health problems among young people increased dramatically over the years, with depression and anxiety being the most common ones. Youth workers, on a daily basis, interact and support young people from different backgrounds and face challenging roles and situations. They often work with young people who are going through behavioral problems, physical or intellectual disabilities, or psychological issues, as well as with young people from migrant communities and minority groups. Unfortunately, drastic changes in Europe, brought new waves of needs in youth work in terms of quality enhancement. Youth workers are people youngsters feel safe to approach, and for many of them, it's more acceptable and easy to approach a youth worker than a traditional health service, as they already have good and trustworthy relations with them. On the other hand, during the activities and projects for young people, there is always a risk of unforeseen situations with a high level of emotions and stress, such as natural disasters, public health emergencies, or even personal crises like the loss of a family member or friend during the project, psychological individual triggers, and so on. Each youth worker should have competencies and tools to tackle these not only from a managerial perspective, but also from a psychological one. While Physical First Aid is used to reduce physical discomfort due to a body injury, Psychological First Aid is a strategy to reduce the painful range of emotions and responses experienced by people exposed to high stress. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a tool that each of us can acquire and use to reduce our stress level. It is NOT a traditional psychotherapy or professional mental health treatment, but rather a strategy to reduce stress reactions by providing additional support to those who have been affected by a traumatic or emergency incident. Taking into account the context above, we believed that it was of crucial importance for youth workers to possess PFA competencies and tools. Therefore, our TC titled 'BE EQUIPPED! Psychological first aid competencies in youth work” brought together 27 participants from 8 countries, where during 7 working days, participants had the space and conditions to go through the process of personal and professional development, developed competencies, and gained tools that they could afterward apply to their daily work. The TC had the following objectives fulfilled: -Raise participants' awareness of the PFA concept and its relevance to youth work practice. -Enable participants to recognize the boundary beyond which reaching for professional help was necessary. -Equip participants with youth age psychological peculiarities knowledge. -Develop participants' competencies in reducing psychological distress in their target groups. -Equip participants with practical methods and techniques for Psychological First Aid. -Form a network of like-minded people and organizations for developing follow-up initiatives aimed at supporting the management of any psychological crises during youth work."
