The Mental Health Without Borders - and Beyond project was created with the overall goal of bringing together young people from different European countries from various backgrounds to design and implement a youth exchange on the topic of mental health. We want to learn about the topic of mental health to improve mental health on a personal level as well as improve the mental health of the people - and especially the young people - around us. Regarding the objectives, the project and youth exchange was conceived with the objective to discuss and explore current understandings of mental health. This was done through gathering ideas from the participants and letting them design the schedule with interactive and non-formal learning methods. Every participant had the opportunity to suggest topics related to mental health, lead discussions and share their knowledge with others. Many participants are students of psychology and neuroscience, so they shared their professional knowledge and direction of mental health research. Participants had the chance to meet and discuss with a professor from Finland who shared the history of mental health stigma and gaps in the research of mental health and related treatments. By focusing on creating a safe space and breaking down the group into smaller sub groups during activities, the participants could feel comfortable sharing their own opinions. The participants also came together with the objective to learn about different cultural, historical and systemic perspectives of mental health, thus covering both factual and scientific aspects of mental health, as well as more subjective ideas such as stigma and taboos. This was achieved through participants preparing before the youth exchange and learning about their own country’s mental health care systems and sharing and comparing with participants from other countries. An important aspect of cultural perspectives is stigma, since the different countries, communities and generations have experienced mental health stigma in a different amount and way. Related to the objective and subjective perspectives on the societal discussion and perception of mental health, the objectives also included sharing and evaluating the suitability of practical solutions like mental healthiness skills, projects, policies, education, and applications for their own personal lives and communities. Lastly, the project also had the objective to expand previous knowledge gained from the youth exchange that took place under the MHWB project in 2022, and to continue to pass that knowledge forward and apply the knowledge further outside of the project. As such, it will include more practical skill learning from others and understanding the way a persons’ mind works, and ways to implement mental healthiness routines in our lives and communities.
