The equaliTEAM project aspired to address a highly sensitive issue: the obstacles that young girls and women encounter on their journey to a successful professional life free from challenges. In a world that has been deeply affected by COVID-19 and is currently highlighting the #MeToo movement, the project aims to enlighten young people about the European Union's policies and efforts towards establishing a society where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a prevailing norm. While the main focus is pointed on young women, the project actively includes and engages young men and individuals outside traditional gender binary format in the conversation, valuing their perspectives to achieve a rich and diverse dialogue. After two years of screen-dominated lives due to the back-to-back lockdowns, equaliTEAM provides young participants with an opportunity for genuine interaction through open discussions and roundtable conversations, involving both peers and experts. The choice of sports as a key factor in the process is significant. Despite the project primarily addressing gender inequality, studies indicate a surge in gender violence during the extended lockdown period, especially impacting women's mental health. To address this disturbing trend, equaliTEAM leverages the positive effects of sports and exercise on both physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, sports activities within equaliTEAM foster teamwork and bonding among participants through engaging and educational experiences. The historical connection between sports and the #MeToo movement in Greece highlights the role of athletes in speaking out against sexist behavior, making them valuable mentors for the young participants striving for gender equality. Finally, the involvement of CYLN in the project ensures that resources and guidance are available for open discussions about mental health—a critical concern for today's youth, who face unprecedented levels of stress. For young women, the fear of gender violence adds a layer of burden, and CYLN, with its expertise in mental health, aims to educate participants on non-violent communication channels, emphasizing the transformative power of sports in this context.
