Global warming, energy crisis, pollution, mass production, waste management, unemployment are some of the problems that threatens the societies in the western world. At the same time, the violent movement of populations around the globe raises the question of coexistence and acceptance of immigrants in their new environment which leads in the creation new social ecosystems in the cities. Government, NGO's, Social Enterprises are seeking for solutions to address the above problems in an innovating and sustainable way. Our project is seeking solutions within the history of the cottage-industry closely related to ROMA population in our area (Rhodope-Greece) as a part of the entire Balkan Peninsula same anthropography and reintroducing ideas and tools deriving from the past through an innovative learning activity for the development of youth workers, inviting them to think outside the box. More specifically, we have identified a technique for making everyday utensils that have been used for centuries, covering the daily needs of a simple household. Thus, this technique of making objects, covers various and different needs of the basic social cell (family-cottage industry) and/or specific facets of society (local society-industry). Moreover, in relation to the scale of production, it can employ, and therefore provide a job outlet, to a group of people involved in the supply of raw materials, processing, knitting and weaving of the utensils and, finally, the sale of the finished product. We underline that the Rhodope area in Greece offers the infrastructure and the right mankind to engage, study and create this kind of activities. In fact, the presence of one-of-a-kind site, the Museum of Basketry of the Roma in the settlement of Thrylorio, Komotini provides the perfect opportunity to explore and showcase the project's main facets(craft skills, connection to culture and history ). From the above, the short-term objectives of the youth workers education program in the art of basketry are : - Theoretical knowledge of the history of this art, - Application of basketry know-how to modern 'waste' materials (natural or artificial) and their reuse as a legitimate "green" business opportunity with multiple application on different industries. - Interaction between nationalities, - Exchange of knowledge and techniques In addition, it will give participating organizations and other youth organizations and social enterprises the tools of including more young people, coming of different backgrounds, to exploring their past in order to gain in creativity and innovation in their work environment.
