Objectives

The "Decoupage - exploration in social communication" project addressed critical social, economic, and environmental challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine predominantly misinformation and fake news. These crises have intensified precarious work conditions, social exclusion, and climate change scepticism, which disproportionately affect young people. Our primary aim was to empower youth workers as positive agents of change by enhancing their communication skills through innovative storytelling methods, including podcasting and live streaming. This, in turn, increased the visibility and impact of youth work, fostering a more informed and resilient society. Objectives: Enhance Media Literacy and Communication Skills: The foremost objective was to improve the key competences and skills of youth workers, particularly in using modern and effective communication tools. By mastering popular formats like live streaming and podcast production, participants were better equipped to disseminate their activities and insights, thus maximizing their social impact as well as understanding and tackling fake news spreading. Promote Positive Social Change: The project aimed to enable these individuals to become catalysts for positive social change by training 22 youth workers from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Lithuania, and Greece. By leveraging cost-effective storytelling methods, they managed to better communicate the significance of their work in addressing social, economic, and environmental issues. Combat Fake News and Misinformation: In an era plagued by misinformation and fake news, a crucial objective was to equip youth workers with the skills to create and disseminate accurate and compelling narratives. This helped counteract false information and promote a more truthful and constructive discourse within their communities. Improve Employability: By enhancing their media and communication skills, the project sought to improve the employability of youth workers. Acquiring competencies in researching, writing for social media, designing audiovisual productions, and implementing dissemination plans has significantly boosted their professional profiles. Foster International Collaboration and Networking: The project aimed to strengthen international collaboration among participating organizations. By sharing best practices and innovative tools for promoting educational activities, the project sought to build a robust network of youth organizations across Europe. Develop Practical Outputs: A practical objective was the production of two tutorial videos and the conduction of a podcast session exploring fake news in participants' countries. These outputs were designed to serve as valuable resources for broader dissemination and ongoing educational use. Support Marginalized Communities: On a local level, the project aimed to enhance the prospects of younger generations, especially marginalized or excluded communities. By promoting the value and role of youth work, the project improved social cohesion and provided opportunities for those most affected by recent crises. Encourage Environmental Sustainability: The project incorporated environmentally friendly practices, aiming to raise awareness about sustainable practices in the hosting space of Colab House. By integrating these practices into the project design and activities, participants have discovered energy-efficient and circular economy appliances in the urban environment. Specific Activities to Achieve Objectives: Workshops and Training Sessions: The project was based on extensive workshops focused on storytelling, podcast creation, and live streaming. Participants learned to design, produce, and disseminate audiovisual content from start to finish. Complementary Activities: As an additional resource, Decoupage has produced interviews with prominent figures of social science and social economy communities like Sabine Pappas and Dr Jennifer Hinton, which delved into themes connected to education and the economy. These interviews were part of a broader effort to create in-depth podcast episodes that have continued with other topics. Practical Production: Participants engaged in hands-on activities, producing two tutorial videos and conducting a podcast session led by researcher journalist Romanos Gkotzos. These sessions provided practical experience and tangible outputs that could be used for further educational purposes. Continuous Improvement and Networking: It fostered stronger relationships with partner organizations, enabling ongoing collaboration and sharing of best practices. This included improving podcast production techniques and facilitating the establishment of new ventures such as a new tinkering lab in Chalandri TransfoLAB ATH.
