The REACCIONARTE project took place in El Borge, a small village in the Axarquía region of Málaga with approximately one thousand inhabitants. The project lasted 14 days of activity, plus two travel days for arrival and departure. This rural and welcoming environment provided an ideal setting to promote intercultural coexistence, artistic creation, and the strengthening of the social fabric, both among participants and with the local community. A total of 39 young people from five different countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Latvia, and Romania), aged between 18 and 30, took part in the project. All participants had a strong interest in art and social issues and were highly motivated to engage actively in every phase of the project. The group included both individuals with training or experience in artistic disciplines and young people eager to explore new forms of expression and social participation. The project’s main objective was to explore and experience how art can serve as a powerful tool for conscious, collective, and transformative social participation. Through non-formal education methodologies, participants were encouraged to reflect on their role in society and to channel their concerns, emotions, and ideas through disciplines such as theatre, dance, graphic arts, juggling, and acrobatics. The core activity of the project, the youth exchange REACCIONARTE, included a diverse program of artistic workshops, sessions on non-violent communication, group-building dynamics, discussion spaces, an introductory crowdfunding course, and a cultural visit to an artistic centre in the rural surroundings. Throughout the exchange, participants worked collectively to create an artistic performance (either scenic or visual) with a social awareness component, which was publicly presented during a final show open to the village. This final performance took place in the village square and was one of the most meaningful moments of the project. It was a collective event showcasing all the acts developed over the two weeks of the exchange. The show included short performances of dance, theatre, poetry readings, live performances, singing and guitar, and visual art displays. This event not only allowed the youth to share the outcomes of their creative process but also created a heartfelt space for interaction with the local community, which participated enthusiastically. Additionally, a Pre-Planning Visit (PPV) was held, where group leaders met to coordinate logistical, methodological, and communication-related aspects. This meeting was essential to align expectations and lay the groundwork for a smooth and high-quality collaboration among partner organizations. Another key element of the project was the celebration of cultural diversity through intercultural evenings, during which each group presented elements of their country’s traditions such as dance, music, food, and customs. These activities fostered a sense of belonging, mutual respect, and appreciation for the different cultures present. The project not only encouraged artistic creation with a social purpose but also strengthened personal competencies such as empathy, cooperation, communication, and leadership among the young participants. On an organizational level, REACCIONARTE fostered new synergies among the involved entities, contributing to the consolidation of a European working network committed to youth, social inclusion, and the use of art as a tool for transformation. The experience in El Borge left a significant mark on both the young participants and the village, which warmly welcomed the project. The visibility and interaction generated between the local population and the participants greatly enriched the atmosphere of the town and offered a rare cultural openness in such a rural setting. In short, REACCIONARTE more than fulfilled its objectives, providing a space for growth, expression, and social commitment, and proving that art, when experienced collectively and meaningfully, can become a true engine of social change.
