Objectives

The youth exchange Greenwalk was a mobility initiative, designed by and for the youth, and it was inspired by the growing need to involve and educate future generations in more sustainable, ecological, and environmentally friendly approaches to life, food, and travel. Sustainable development means that everyone, including future generations, are able to fulfil their needs and realise their rights, while ensuring that this does not overshoot Earth’s natural resources and fundamental life-supporting systems such as a stable climate and fertile soils. To do so and to reach the Sustainable Development Goals in the next few years, we, the youth, want to be educated, involved and empowered and to do the same for the future generations. We want to be more involved and raise our own voices on subjects that matter. According to the Sustainable Development Report, the situation with the pandemic meant a setback for sustainable development in Europe. The SDG Index across the EU27 countries has declined in 2020 for the first time since 2005 due to COVID-19. With the situation slowly recovering, we created and designed a youth exchange from the youth for the youth. In this exchange, discussions took place on sustainability, recycling, climate change, and different methodologies were employed to raise voices, voice opinions, and debate on possible steps that could be taken in the future to bring about positive change. Sustainable development, as it was understood at that time, meant that everyone, including future generations, could fulfill their needs and realize their rights without overshooting Earth's natural resources and fundamental life-supporting systems, such as a stable climate and fertile soils. The initiative aimed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the coming years, with the youth having been educated, involved, and empowered to contribute to the cause. In response to the setback caused by the pandemic, as highlighted in the Sustainable Development Report, sustainable development in Europe faced challenges, and the SDG Index across the EU27 countries had declined in 2020 for the first time since 2005 due to COVID-19. Now, with the situation having slowly recovered, the youth had wanted to create and design a youth exchange from the youth for the youth. In this exchange, discussions took place on sustainability, recycling, climate change, and different methodologies were employed to raise voices, voice opinions, and debate on possible steps that could be taken in the future to bring about positive change.. Participants not only learned about the reality of these issues but also engaged in debates, pondered future steps, and actively explored ways to improve their everyday lives. Regarding the topics of the exchange, the focus during the past exchange included: Developed a sense of initiative and proactive behavior. Cultivated a sense of activism. Raised awareness of the topics of pollution and climate change. Learned new skills using the 5 R’s of recycling. Raised awareness of the importance of consuming local products. Promoted a healthy lifestyle. Developed a sense of responsibility regarding the goals for sustainable development.
