Objectives

The "Rural Forks" project is a participation activity in which young people from different areas of Spain have taken part and which has been carried out in two rural areas of Castilla y León and Aragón. It is an innovative project that aims to respond to the needs of young people who live or are interested in those areas that are increasingly lacking in services, work, infrastructures and initiatives, and to the needs of the areas themselves, which are becoming increasingly depopulated, ageing and with a trend that is detrimental to their vitality. In recent decades, rural areas across Europe have faced massive depopulation, with part of the population moving to large cities. This phenomenon has gradually led to a reduction in employment opportunities, a decline in infrastructure, services and initiatives, and a worrying rise in the average age. The importance of youth in these areas is evident; young people assume a strategic role in all aspects of depopulation and the consequent regeneration and development of rural areas in the social, employment and environmental spheres. This is why Rural Forks has involved thirty young people, two organisations, two rural areas at high risk of depopulation, two bike rides between the mapping of good practices of participation and entrepreneurship and real contact with communities and actors in the area, which has led us to the creation of networks and initiatives, to a real and direct confrontation with territorial development actors and to the identification of a method and a path of rural development that places at the centre the community that can be most decisive, that of young people. Rural Forks has been able to: - connect young people and offer them an opportunity for confrontation, learning and participation; - to analyse in depth the rural territories of the project, highlighting difficulties, objectives and opportunities, and to raise young people's awareness through active discovery; - identify, highlight and give visibility to initiatives, projects and activities in the territories that can be exemplary and present a vision of sustainable rural development, also linked to the interests of the young participants; - provide opportunities for learning, reflection, action and awareness-raising about the SDGs and current eco-social challenges and the fight against climate change through the good practices identified in the territories; - identify what characterises participation in sustainable development in rural areas and provide spaces and channels for youth, stakeholders, policymakers and communities to discuss; - provide spaces and moments of information on initiatives and opportunities offered to young people and the rural environment at local, national and European levels; - to offer moments of exchange between young people and the local community; - revitalise and dynamise the social fabric of rural areas and create cooperation between territories; - create networks and synergies between the different realities involved in the project; - fostering links and shared learning between communities in the different territories; - create innovative and sustainable ways of involvement and participation that can be replicated; - create channels of visibility, information and promotion of rural areas and their best practices, suitable for attracting a young audience; - promote sustainable mobility and experiential learning; - develop ideas for the active participation of young people in the areas involved; - promote the Erasmus+ programme and its opportunities, as well as non-formal education methods.
