Objectives

The SESSAD is working on three mainly areas: education, pedagogy and therapeutic. Through this exchange, we wanted to have an impact on the three of them. The youngsters are with disabilities and shows behavioral disorders and learning difficultes. They are categorized as youngsters with fewer opportunities. From an educative point of view, we worked on socials and relationals abilities. Being in a group, for a week, in an unknown city, allowed them to live an experience in which they were in position of responsibility and autonomy. We wanted to work skills that they have to invoke and valorize them during the exchange and next. We wanted to promote this exchange by proposing to our youngsters to create something in order to leave a trace, and feel they have a place in the service. We noticed that most of our youngsters have some difficult to involve themselves in project, often by fear not to be at the level. This project was a tool to make them understand that working together, being helped by the other without seeing them as a threat, could allow them being a driving force for the group. We want that they find their place in the group and to use this experience in their dailylife. On a pedagogic point of view, we created a group on every Wednesday afternoon with the special teacher. Many times, youngsters of SESSAD of Gerland were undermined by scolarity, then, they develop apathy towards school. For them, it’s a place where their difficulties are put on the front and where they’re face to their fear of failure. We hopep they take part of the learnings thanks to their interest of this project, and learn more about Europe history, Sweden and its culture. We were looking for a work of research, take some informations and the pleasure to learn. Some of our youngsters already showed us their knowledge of this items, Europe for example. Step by step, we wanted to give them back the taste of learning, of being in a classroom, and show to the others what they know without anxiety. About the therapeutic area, exchange helped us build between the youngsters and the professionals, a therapeutic alliance. Thanks to it, youngsters can feel themselves enough in confidence in order to talk about their anxiety and be sure that professionals will be able to support them. Going to a foreign country allowed us to meet youngsters by a different way, and on another everyday life. And this is the same for youngsters with professionals: the meeting between youngsters and professionals, on a way more informal, have reduced the feeling of distance that youngsters may feel. Shared memories and experiences, even after the journey, participate in a long-term relationship. This therapeutic alliance helps professionals to work at the closest needs of youngsters, who manage to talk about themselves more sincerely, same as professionals, in order to create an authentic meeting, solid base to work with our youngsters with fewer opportunities. Finally, the project Discovering Europe through swedish culture was a way for two youth groups to meet, talk and think about how biodiversity is protected and what is their role in it.
