Objectives

The aim of the exchange was to share and discuss with young people the research developed by the ‘Young people, social inequalities and peripheries’ international research network, which brings together young people, researchers, artists and teachers from eleven countries: France, France-Mayotte, Brazil, Senegal, Palestine, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Portugal and Tunisia. The network has been working for 10 years on social mediation spaces and support for young people in inner-city neighbourhoods, with its latest research project entitled ‘From anger to democracy’. The question was : how can the youth hosting area and workers enable young people to be heard and put them into action, which is a source of experimentation with a democratic process and alternative ways of dealing with young people's anger. The summary elements (updated to the post-covid situation) put forward for discussion were as follows: the vital importance of listening and the collective in supporting young people in socialisation through actions following a democratic process. The importance of the listening/knowledge/transformation chain in supporting this change, and the importance of the notion of welcome/hospitality. The shared pedagogical practices were organised around 3 axes: art-movement-transformation, leadership-social and soilidarity-relationship with oneself-relationship with others-relationship with the world-pedagogies of alterity. The aim was to build a common experience, share practices and identify the collective educational dynamics promoted by youth organisations that answer to the desperation of young people in the face of their daily difficulties.
