Objectives

The project "(RE)PRESENT - Student Councils for Democratic Schools" aimed to empower students to actively participate in decision-making processes and advocate for the rights of students in schools and communities, to make the voices of high school students heard where they spend most of their time – in schools. The specific objectives of the project were: to increase the knowledge and skills of students for co-decision-making about their rights and obligations in schools; to raise awareness among student councils about the importance and principles of democratic schools and the European Youth Goals; to increase awareness of the importance of supporting the work of student councils in ensuring a democratic school culture among decision-makers. The project results primarily relate to the successful implementation of activities aimed at empowering students for their role as active citizens in school and the local community. Through the activities, the students increased their knowledge of the principles of democratic schools and the role of student councils, improved their skills in advocating for the needs of students, and established successful dialogue with decision-makers on the local level. The students also created educational materials for the existing education for student councils, which created space for peer learning and knowledge exchange. The education comprised of topics such as the role of student council representatives, how to assess the needs of students in their school, how to communicate with various stakeholders, and how to develop good student council programs. At the end of the project, the students had the opportunity to exchange experiences and evaluate their work, as well as to provide guidelines and recommendations for decision-makers to support the work of student councils in democratizing schools.
