The project “Youth Learning (through) the Community” was aimed to contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for active youth participation in the processes of community development, through the development of the model of collaboration focused at encouraging volunteering and community engagement of young people. This aim was achieved by attaining the specific objectives of the project, that were: -to inform and empower/encourage young people for active participation through the application of the model of participatory creation of volunteer actions or other initiatives based on the assessed needs of the community - to strengthen the capacities of volunteer organisers and other; stakeholders for the application of the model of participatory creation of volunteer actions or other community engagement initiatives; -to develop recommendations for quality encouragement of volunteering and community engagement of young people, through the establishment of the model of key stakeholders' collaboration. The idea for the project emerged from the needs and interests of young people, secondary school pupils and older youth, that were recognized through the implementation of Youth Volunteers Club, collaborative programme of Volunteer Centre Istria and Association ZUM, as well as through different VCI's projects oriented to encouraging and enabling more active, volunteer involvement of young people in the community. In the mentioned activities VCI consistently uses the participatory approach in the community needs' assessment and the creation and implementation of youth volunteering activities and actions, while the involved young people give exceptionally positive feedback about the approach and this type of collaboration, and very actively participate in all the phases. However, the experience shows that the concept of such activities, when implemented in cooperation with other organisations, doesn’t provide longer-term active involvement of young people, because the activities are usually one-time occasions and the collaborating organisations, like schools and volunteer organisers, don’t use the participatory approach in the measure that would enable youth to be more involved in the creation of the activities that respond to the community needs as well as resonate with their own needs and interests. This is why the proposed project was aimed to design a sustainable model of collaboration between young people and volunteer organisers, based on the participatory approach to the creation of volunteer activities, and whose establishment and implementation can be additionally supported by schools and municipalities. To ensure this, the planned project activities involved all the mentioned stakeholders. The implementation of the project “Youth Learning (through) the Community” also contributed to the specific objective of Erasmus+ programme “promote non-formal and informal learning mobility and active participation among young people, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of organisations and policies in the field of youth”, and the objectives of the Action 1: Youth participation activities “provide young people with opportunities to engage and learn to participate in civic society” and “bring together young people and decision makers at local, regional, national and transnational level and/or contribute to the EU Youth Dialogue”.
