in recent years we have been witnessing a progressive deterioration of democratic values in the world, so evident that we are beginning to ask: is democracy in danger? has the 2 years of pandemic changes our approach with the democracy? Is the European Union still the stronghold of it? As a lethal pandemic, economic and physical insecurity and violent conflict ravaged the world in 2020,democracy’s defenders sustained heavy losses in their struggle against authoritarian foes, shifting the international balance in favor of tyranny. Incumbent leaders increasingly used force to crush opponents and settle scores, sometimes in the name of public health, something is the name of national protection. International surveys shows the 15th consecutive year of decline in global freedom. In Europe, this "crisis" seems to affect almost every nation: we all remember the brutal repression in France in 2018 when people start to protest for the rise of petrol price, economic inequality and cost of live. 12 person dead and almost 4500 people injuries(Wikipedia). But also Europeans has received a major shock with the Russian threat that is threatening democratic values and freedom in the east Europe. The recent Italian elections confirmed the most voted party is the heir of the fascist party (first time in their history after 1945) which is anti European, pro russian, populist, nationalist, xenophobic and anti-immigration. Turkey (NATO member) ranks 154th out of 180 countries in World Press Freedom Index 2020. A recent Pew Research Center survey, highlighted the gap in the former Warsaw pact nations between what citizens want from democracy and what they actually see happening in their countries, the citizens in these nations nonetheless had strong criticisms and deep disappointments about the post-communist era. Roughly four-in-ten or more across these nations say the changes since the fall of communism have had a negative influence on health care, law, order, and family values. We feel democracy is in danger also in Europe due to the rise of various reasons: economic crisis, relapse into illiteracy, populism, lack of youth partecipations in the democratic process/live, extremisms, power centralization, Ukraine war and many others. We need to strengthen the democracy foundations, which today it seems to be fragile and under attack from multiple forces and interests. To do this, we must look to young people, as they represent the future and hope, which is the reason we have planned this youth change: young people play a key role in this issue. - PROJECT' OBJECTIVES - - Increase the participants democratic dimension, to understand and to apreciate the democracy' values ; - Increase the participation of young people in democratic and social life; - Let the youngsters to understand the importance of a democratic system and the risks that populism can bring (authoritarianism, totalitarianism ecc); - Contribute to youngsters' understanding of the European Union, its history, its diversity and to raise awareness of remembrance, common history and values as well the aim of the European Union. - To give young people an example of cooperation on the international level and encourage them to undertake similar activities in the future (also within Erasmus+) - To strengthen the network of which Európai Fiatalokért Egyesület is part.
