The primary aim of the project was to enable youth workers and youth leaders to gain deeper, reality-based knowledge of how democracy functions, and to better understand the importance of civic engagement. Based on our experience, many young people are interested in participating in public life, but they often lack a comprehensive understanding of democratic systems as well as the practical knowledge necessary for active participation. This project sought to address this issue by providing participating youth workers with opportunities to explore the core principles of democracy—and the structure of democratic institutions in Hungary and Romania—through hands-on, non-formal learning activities, institutional visits, and debate clubs. It also aimed to highlight both the differences and similarities between the two countries’ democratic systems. The main goal was for participants to gain a broad and practical understanding of democracy, and to return home with new ideas and good practices that they could integrate into their work and their organizations. Additionally, we aimed to strengthen dialogue between young leaders from the two countries and to encourage cross-border cooperation and networking. The collaborative nature of the project created space for participants to reflect together on the forms and challenges of democratic participation, and to jointly develop solutions that could be implemented in their own communities. As part of the program, participants created an accessible, easy-to-understand educational publication on the topic of democracy. This material included key information and experiences gained during the project. The publication, developed collaboratively, provided practical knowledge in a user-friendly format and was later distributed by the participants within their own communities. The goal of this initiative was to promote greater transparency and democratic functioning within youth organizations, and to empower young people to confidently take an active role in shaping their communities. By equipping youth leaders with such knowledge and experience, the project clearly contributed to achieving this goal.
