Objectives

The following are the objectives of our project A) Youth Leaders - Further personal development and acquisition of new skills and competencies b) Participants- The transferable skills gained from the project and their application to future employment opportunities, in particular to careers in the maritime sector c) Inclusion and diversity, particularly with regards the recruitment of participants. d) Improving collaboration between partner organisations. e) Promoting the participants confidence and willingness to take a more constructive role in society. a) Youth Leaders have been essential to the success of previous projects. Like the participants, they have benefited from the experience, but have additional responsibilities of leadership, supervision, safeguarding, health and safety. It is planned to further develop the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to become effective leaders. Participants will learn the core concepts of leadership and gain skills such as communication, active listening, interpersonal, problem solving, analytical, critical thinking and self-awareness and they will be empowered and challenged to use these skills in an encouraging and supportive environment. b) Transferable skills to future employment: We are aware of a great range of benefits to the participants. The skills developed on our voyages can be transferred to all aspects of their lives. Many participants reported that the experience had been a life changing one. In that they have been exposed to a range of employment opportunities within the marine industry they didn't know existed. c) Inclusion: We aim to recruit a diverse range of participants from a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds and from different regions of the country. The Sail Training experience pushes participants outside their comfort zone and this, combined with the open environment on board a sail training ship, leads people to mingle and socialise. In this environment young people grow in confidence and self-knowledge. From previous projects we have found that the Sail Training experience gives young people the chance to grow and learn about themselves and each other. It increases their self-empowerment and self esteem, it fosters friendships and solidarity between participants.
