Objectives

The project aimed to enhance the competencies of youth workers and educators in using games-based learning and gamification as a medium for Global Education and to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The concept of the project emerged from the identification of the need to find innovative, interactive and fun ways to engage young people on global issues and support their empowerment to take informed action. Our overall aim was to explore and showcase how games-based learning and gamification are powerful mediums to support young people’s skills development and recognition of the attitudes and values needed to be a global citizen. The focal skills included critical thinking, media literacy, problem solving, systems thinking and active citizenship. We had five main objectives: Explore meaning and principles of Gamification and its uses in non-formal education Use games based learning approaches to explore key global education pillars such as critical thinking, problem solving and active citizenship Examine the use of games (online, video games, board games, role play in Global Education) Equip youth workers with knowledge and skills to tackle key global issues such as climate change, conflict and migration Allow a space for youth workers to use Gamification tools to explore the SDGs Generally, we wished to use active learning and participatory methodologies which youth workers and trainers could emulate in their own contexts, support their ongoing practice with a wide array or resources and innovative tools and build a network of trainers across Europe who are actively using games-based learning and gamification in their practice. Lastly, we hoped to empower and motivate them to see that it is possible and imperative we tackle global issues from our own local contexts and to see the SDGs as a framework that addresses the challenges we face at a local, national and global level.
