Objectives

The objectives of the project were to increase positive thinking of participants and target groups towards immigrants and make them more aware of the treasure of multiculturalism for the benefit of their society. Also to build connection between the students of the partner schools, young people from two different countries, connection that they can build on friendship for the future. By working towards those objjectives through music and orchestral playing, where young people from Iceland and Italy sat side by side, in powerful harmony, the young people experienced how powerful and successful cooperation between nations is, regardless of origin, and much more effective than when each group individually performed the same music alone, in their country. Concert audience and others in the target group of the project also experienced the success of the collaboration in powerful performances at concerts and through live stream from the concerts.

Background

The purpose of the project "Around the world in eight songs - cultural wealth of immigrants“ was to increase the positivity of young people towards immigrants and to build strong bonds between young people from two different countries, friendship that can last a lifetime. The project was carried out with music, where two different groups of music students from Kópavogur and Rome, met twice and experienced together through common music interest how cooperation between different groups, from different countries can produce great results and powerful sound. They also experienced that immigrants have had great and positive impact on music life and the whole society in Iceland and Italy. They lifted music education and music performance to much higher standard, e.g. during World War II. Students of foreign origin studying at the schools were specially invited to participate in the project to strengthen their position and positive experience. The young participates rehearsed together in a mixed orchestra where the Italians and Icelanders sat side by side and supported each other. Strong friendships were also formed during free time, games and chats while the participating groups spent a week together in both Italy and Iceland.
