Objectives

The socio-economic divide has been on the rise in Europe over the past decades. In a climate of great uncertainty caused by the global financial crisis, health and climate crises and the war and has intensified. Many analysts are alarmed by the growing inequalities in our societies. Although Europe is one of the most equal regions in the world, it is far from achieving its goals of social justice and equality. Inequality can lower social trust in institutions and fuel political and social instability. The higher the level of economic inequality, the higher will be the “social barriers” between groups and the less individuals will feel familiar with and connect to other people. Inequality may also generate a perception of injustice: it is difficult to develop trust in others if they are seen as having unfair advantages. Finally, unequal communities may disagree over how to share (and finance) public goods, and those disagreement can turn break social ties and lessen social cohesion. Broken trust can lead to intolerance and discrimination and there is growing concern across European countries and more globally over the association with political instability. The core goal of the “Youth for Equals-Eu” project is to come up with ways to reduce social inequality and to raise awareness, understanding, and introspection amongst youth about privilege and social inequality.
