Democracy and inclusive democratic participationPreventing racism and discriminationReception and integration of refugees and migrants

Objectives

In many countries there is widespread public opposition to immigration that reaches any significant numbers. Host communities are not always receptive towards migrants and refugees, which creates additional challenges of social integration in their new homes. People sometimes don’t feel they are ready to understand others and be flexible towards migrants, and be aware about the issues that lead them to move from one country to another. Discrimination, fears, xenophobia can be a big threat towards immigrants and if not taking actions to be a tolerant towards them, we can meet serious problems in future. The regular integration programs mainly focus more on the formal aspects of accepting migrants while the social integration is left out of attention. And here is where youth work can play a crucial role. Youth organisations and young people can be the key problem-solvers through their daily work to find and integrate newcomers. The project aimed to raise the awareness of youth workers about migration issues, develop their skills and competences and strengthen their capacity to ensure better integration of young refugees and immigrants into local communities. The objectives of this project were: ● Increase youth workers’ knowledge about immigration types and processes, forms and main practices ● Provide a deeper understanding of major sources of social exclusion such as stereotypes and labelling towards migrants with the explicit aim of eliminating hate speech against people with migrant background ● Enhance youth workers’ knowledge about reasons behind migration and make them familiar with the main challenges migrants face in host communities ● Explore the potential of youth work in preventing discriminative and radical behaviour towards people with migrant background and learn how youth workers can be active on the local level to foster the social integration of migrants ● Raise professional capacities of workers by giving them specific methods and tools for migrant's empowerment and inclusion in their local communities; ● Motivate and encourage the young people to initiate activities that would foster inclusion of migrants and refugees ● Develop a concrete plan for follow-up projects and local activities focusing on promoting migrant and refugee integration ● Establish a network of like-minded organisations and individuals who are interested in the further exchange on the topic of promoting integration process The end goal for the project was to use the gained skills and knowledge by implementing activities for the local communities in the work with people with migrant background (immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, IDPs) in the participating countries. The result of the project was a number of activities were implemented by the participants in their respective communities and qualified youth workers with enhanced skills in the long-term perspective.
