Objectives

The Animal Library Project was born from the idea of a group of 14-year-old students at the Educational Center and Animal Refuge L’Oasi Felice degli Animali—four girls who had been following a cognitive-relational educational path with horses for years, as part of their personal growth and life skills development. The needs this group of young people had identified included the lack of educational pathways—especially in public institutions—focused on the socio-emotional and relational development of boys and girls; and the lack of spaces for young people from different backgrounds to meet and connect—particularly for those who had experienced difficult situations, such as young migrants, young people with disabilities, or those who had come into contact with the justice system. The area where L’Oasi Felice degli Animali was located, the province of Medio Campidano, is a rural area where many small villages and towns are poorly connected to each other, and where there was a lack of initiatives and opportunities for youth—leading many to emigrate to Cagliari. Through the project, the youngsters aimed to promote the socio-educational approach offered at Oasi Felice degli Animali by organizing awareness-raising activities in their schools; participative awareness raising events; dialogues with teachers, school principals, municipal social workers, and the local health authority (ASL); and by co-creating and publishing books together with other young people. These books could then become educational tools to be shared with families, schools, and other relevant public institutions, as well as materials for raising awareness. With this premise, the general goal of the project was: To empower young people by providing them with useful tools for civic engagement within their communities, while developing their sense of initiative and participation. The specific objectives were: To create spaces for interaction among young people from diverse socio-cultural and economic backgrounds, allowing them to explore and discuss educational methods suited to their needs; To foster dialogue between young people and decision-makers, enabling youth to make their voices heard and influence youth policy.
