Objectives

The project Young Women for Equal and Inclusive Neighborhoods aimed primarily to promote gender equality in youth contexts in peripheral areas through a process of awareness-raising and training. We decided to implement this project because we noticed an inequality of accessibility of gender centered discourses when comparing the central areas of the city and other peripheral areas. From this need we defined as a main scope of the project widening the inclusivity and accessibility to gender equality discourses within peripheral areas of Bologna and to do so we started with a specific neighborhood, San Donato-San Vitale, which is characterized, like many other peripheral areas of the city, by a stronger presence of first and second generation immigrant communities. When planning the project we decided to address the following needs: -The production of quality information and tools aimed at young people, in particular with regard to gender issues, from the level of individual awareness to the institutional level relating to the under-representation of women and other marginalized identities - especially at the apex of decision-making processes . -The development of safe spaces for dialogue and discussion in the target areas -The desire to include young people in decision-making processes, and in particular young women who may be subject to exclusion or fewer opportunities due to their gender, but also other intersectional discrimination processes (economic, social, disability-related, area of dwelling and so on). -The need to contextualize European good practices from a more gender-sensitive point of view, tracing the malfunctions that sometimes leave the more peripheral areas isolated. In order to contribute to our primary aim we involved a target group of 10 young women from the neighborhood, working toward the creation of a participatory network that integrated as well local communities and the neighborhood associations (including Eurobox ETS, which has its operative office in the area). The network thus built, with the constant mentoring of our NGO staff, initiated a series of public events within the neighborhood to bring people together around constructive dialogue on gender equality topics, aligning with the European Commission's GE strategy 2020-2025 A Union of Equality. This process was overall articulated in three main phases: education and training of the core group (1), planning of the final events (2) and the participatory events themselves (3). Each of the three phases of the project was developed around the following specific objectives: 1.Empowerment of the Core Group through meetings on topics such as gender equality in youth participation processes, the empowerment of young women, critical thinking about gender biases, and media literacy. A “core group” of young women and those identifying as such was formed, creating a space for sharing experiences and discussions. 2. Building a local participatory network (Gender Hub, later called with the participants Generando Network) that could facilitate networking among young people with similar values, creating a space for developing good practices on gender equality. The content produced during the core group's training was collected and disseminated within and beyond the community to promote ideas and proposals to be presented to politicians and decision-makers, from the local/regional level to the European level. 3. Raising awareness among the youth in the peripheral areas of Bologna through public events held in the last phase of the project. The “core group” participants were supported in becoming advocates for gender equality and the participation of young women in political and social life. The skills developed were tested during events open to everyone, consolidating the results achieved in the project.
