Objectives

The project had three overarching objectives: 1) Increase sense of community and social capital: Engage 50 young migrants to enhance their social integration through participatory activities and pilot interventions 2) Empower young researchers: Train six young individuals with migrant backgrounds in participatory action research and social inclusion methodologies, equipping them with practical skills for future employment 3) Foster collaboration among stakeholders: Strengthen networks between migrants, NGOs and public autorities in promoting wellbeing and the social inclusion of young people with a migrant background

Background

The "We Are Part" project was initiated to address critical needs faced by young migrants and refugees in Europe, particularly in Greece and Italy. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing challenges, including social isolation, limited access to resources, and discrimination. Migrants, especially young individuals, struggled to integrate socially due to strict lockdowns and xenophobia, as highlighted by Eurofound and IOM reports. In Italy, where Communia operates, young migrants voiced a strong need for opportunities to socialize and overcome hostility. Similarly, Velos Youth in Greece noted significant barriers such as housing shortages, limited access to services, and systemic discrimination against unaccompanied minors transitioning to adulthood. This project aimed to mitigate these challenges by fostering a sense of community, promoting inclusion, and empowering migrants to co-create solutions for integration, by fostering important resources such as social capital, sense of community and collaboration with local stakeholders.
