Media literacy and tackling disinformationPromoting gender equality

Objectives

No country had completely closed the gender gap, and if prevailing trends persisted, it would have taken another 99.5 years for the world to achieve full gender equality. Gender equality in the media was underscored by the United Nations as one of the most critical impending issues. Given that women were marginalized to varying extents in news content across nearly every country globally, the project aimed to educate, inspire, and empower young individuals about the gender gap in the media and potential solutions to address this worldwide challenge. Given that young people were the most active users of social media, they were particularly sensitive to the information they encountered. This sensitivity posed potential risks to gender equality, human rights, and could perpetuate sexism and other unfavorable behaviors—highlighting the hazards prevalent in online spaces due to gender inequality depicted in the media. In its pursuit to mitigate these challenges, the project's more specific objectives were to: - Examine how gender inequalities and stereotypes are portrayed in the media in various nations. - Raise public awareness and improve understanding about the gender gap in the media and its consequences for society. - Reflect, learn, and encourage insightful conversations on digital dangers, including sexism, cyber-harassment, cyberviolence, and discrimination. - Encourage people to use the media as a tool for change and empowerment in order to foster gender equality, social inclusion, and human rights.
