The history of Europe indicates the importance of preserving national treasures, diversity, and their values, along with different religious and ethnic identities from various backgrounds. The EU needed to cope with an increasingly globalizing world, positioning itself as a melting pot where everybody welcomed. Communities across Europe had opened their doors to welcome over four million refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Reports by Euro-Med Monitor's team and other human rights agencies showed that Black, Asian, and Middle Eastern refugees were treated very differently when they arrived at the border in European countries. Embracing diversity rather than resisting it could bring enormous benefits. Given the increasing refugee and migrant issues in our partner countries, we came up with an idea of using theater as a tool to foster empathy and tolerance towards refugees. Our experiences and research with our partner organizations had shown that theater could be a creative alternative to address the issue from a youth work perspective. Therefore, we implemented theater as an inclusion tool for refugees in our communities. Based on our exchange of ideas and motivation with the participating organizations, as a contribution to the recently increasing refugee issue, we specified the following specific objectives of our project according to our tailored needs in order to contribute to the integration of refugees and migrants in our local communities: - Increase the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competences of 36 participants from 6 organizations to use theater as a tool to fight against racism, hate speech, stereotypes, and other forms of discrimination towards refugees and migrants. - Development of theatrical capacity of partner organizations and participants for the promotion of social inclusion of refugees in local communities. - Creation of intercultural dialogue among 36 young people through theater to learn how to foster tolerance and social inclusion. - Enable participants to better understand empathy and mutual respect and establish intercultural dialogue through theater. In addition to these specific objectives, the THEATER project also aimed to enable participants to discover opportunities within the Erasmus+ and youth mobility programs and to encourage them to take part in other projects and cooperate in the future. We wanted to encourage European organizations (at least 3 local organizations per partner, totaling 15 organizations) to use theater as a creative tool in the social inclusion of migrants. Participants in the project were involved in activities based on non-formal education, helping them improve transversal skills, knowledge, and competences related to social inclusion as well as the EU Youth Strategy, and create dialogue using theatrical tools. They worked on improving solidarity competences through empowerment, engagement, and connection.
