The initial idea for this project was sparked during the Waste Management Youth Exchange we organized in 2021. The participants from that youth exchange asked a question: How can we prevent plastic waste in the Catfarm community? This question generated a lot of interest in the community, and for almost a year we were in contact with partners and participants from all the countries involved in the project to develop it and research the topic, which was close to many people's hearts and related to environmental causes. The main objective of this project was to bring people from different cultures together to increase plastic awareness and provide a long-term social consciousness around the topic. By sharing knowledge and tools with each other, collecting plastic from the local area, exploring new technology using recycling machines from “La Palanque” our local partner , and making small plastic objects. It was our aim to raise awareness about plastic consumption and increase the use of recycled plastics objects together with the partners, participants and the local environment with the result of creating a positive social and environmental change. Since the plastic issue wasn't just a regional problem but a common global problem, the participants wanted to reach people from different backgrounds as much as possible. So, we started first with the people closest to us, namely the international volunteers that are involved in our organisation - Adventures of Valparaiso, the volunteers living in our sister organisation Catfarm, then we worked with local people, and afterwards we educated people online from all around the world. The youth exchange aimed to achieve the following specific objectives: - Established a social bond between people living in the immediate neighbourhood and the international participants and the communities - Brought together people from different cultures in a co-creative social and environmental project by involving participants in all phases of the project - Raised awareness of plastic waste issues and empowered people to take action to reduce the excessive use of plastic and take care of the planet - Collected and recycled plastic waste in the village of Poussan and reduced the environmental pollution in the local area - Increased use of recycled products while exploring the possibilities offered by innovative technologies to find new solutions to reducing plastic waste - Enabled young people to acquire personal, social, and professional skills - Immersed participants in an experimental way of life within an eco-place which offered an example of leading ecological lifestyles - Promoted social inclusion by sharing food cultures, exchanging international perspectives, developing intercultural competence, understanding different cultures and appreciating diversity - Shared cultures, exchanged ideas among youth to form a base for future corporations and projects - Raised awareness on the practices of policies and systems in matters of non-formal education of youth in the EU
