Objectives

Traditionally, most research projects do not include young people in 1) the design of the study (especially the onboarding phase), and 2) the interpretation and dissemination of results. This might lead to disengagement and low participation rates, as young people are oftentimes confronted with lengthy and text-heavy study materials that are hard to go through. Once a study is finished, the results are oftentimes analyzed and shared with other scientists through scientific publications and at best other stakeholders - frequently without meaningful feedback to the young people themselves. As a result, young participants often face a high entry barrier to participate and learn from research and are often left unaware of how their contributions were used. Moreover, their input is typically interpreted by researchers and stakeholders who are not part of the target demographic, creating further distance. The objective of this project was an exploratory effort to put youth at the helm of reshaping onboarding and dissemination practices in research studies, in order to make them more engaging and meaningful to that target audience. We aimed to give participants more insight into how research projects work, by having youth actively contribute to the onboarding and dissemination process. Ultimately, our goal was to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for research among young people, while improving participation frameworks and dissemination strategies in youth-focused studies. We used Detour, a mobile intervention to help youth quit smoking as a research case in the current project. Note that in the grant application we refer to the intervention as HitnRun. HitnRun was renamed to Detour based on youth feedback, after we submitted the Erasmus+ Grant. Therefore we will refer to Detour instead of HitnRun throughout this evaluation.
