Objectives

The project idea was created by a group of young people interested in photography, who wanted to share their passion with other young people from various European countries. The photography is a tool to develop creative expression on one side, but also is a way to develop digital skills which are part of the modern key competences not only for young people but for everyone. The photo-camera is easy to find in almost everyone pocket but it is not obvious that everyone has basic knowledge how to use that tool to get satisfied results of everyday documentation of his life, relatives or events. The photography was concern as well as a tool for discovering local cultural heritage of Rozbark, Bytom and Upper Silesia which is very unique on the national level in Poland - the local heritage is directly linked with coal and iron industry which was the engine to re-build Poland after the Second World War. Nowadays the situation is very challenging on many levels - the coal is almost gone and the natural environment is very devastated because of the industrial activities. The question for the Bytom city is - what can be the new identity of that place and the people who are living here, if they can not identify themselves as coal mine workers or iron factory workers. And how the city can implement green transformation to get advantage and promote itself - to bring new citizens who wish to settle here. To sum up the main topics chosen by the initiative group of young people from Bytom for the exchange were photography workshops for creative expression and digital skills development, and the challenge of green transformation of Bytom city, which is impacted a lot by the local historical coal&iron heritage on many levels. It was the first exchange project to be planned, organized and implemented by the Polish group (most of them already had the experience from another exchange abroad), so additional goals for them was to learn how to plan, prepare and implement such an activity by themselves, also to learn by doing and making mistakes, what happen also to us but fortunately not too much. What we are especially proud of, all the workshops were facilitated by participants themselves. The leaders were mostly involved only in monitoring and evaluation processes (which needs a bit more expertise) and helped with the logistics. The expected impact of the project was related to the fact that Bytom, apart of its magnificent, but dirty and kind of forgotten architecture, is considered stereotypically as uninteresting city and nobody is visitng it. By the photo-activities around the city and meetings with local activists who are passionate about the history and heritage, we had an ambition to show the city and people in an attractive way and break the stereotypes - to prove that this place may be very interesting for foreigners and everybody can learn a lot by the history of that place - in relation to Silesians who consider themselves as unrespected minority, in relation to Polish-German history and heritage, nevertheless also to the challenging re-building the local identity, respect to the history but looking to the future with big respect to nature and taking care about the impact on natural environment. The learning goals we set (and achieved) were: - breaking national and local stereotypes, promoting tolerant attitudes, - gaining knowledge about environmental protection and views on conserving resources, - learning about Bytom and Upper Silesia as a place with a particular mining and industrial history, which is currently to acquire knowledge about Bytom and Upper Silesia as a place with a particular mining and industrial history, which is currently facing major socio-economic and environmental problems, - developing active, creative and entrepreneurial attitudes, - artistic development of the participants, - digital development of participants through acquisition of skills related to digital photography and its editing, - coach development, learning how to teach others by giving workshops to other participants, - gaining knowledge about other European countries, their culture and traditions, - gaining managerial competences by project participants (organisation of a photo exhibition, cooperation with local partners, planning and realisation of the local partners, planning and implementing the exchange programme), - development of linguistic competences, in particular with practice of the use of English in practice On the organizational level Eastern Theatre had a chance to strength the network between the partner organizations from abroad and create a new connections with local partners in Bytom, which will be very useful in the future when the organization will plan new activities (we already know we are going to organize 2nd edition of this project in Bytom, with more advanced and developed program and completely new partners from abroad).
