Project Alert: Desertification aimed to raise awareness among young people about the threat of desertification in their region or country and to seek solutions that could halt this process in the near future. We educated participants about the causes, effects, and impacts of desertification on people's lives in various parts of the world. The project also addressed the issues of climate change, deforestation and environmental protection. The project made participants aware of the problem of desertification and climate change both globally and locally. Young people had the opportunity to develop their own solutions, ideas, and strategies, which could be implemented in their future professional or personal lives through group work. During the project, participants discussed general aspects of the desertification problem, examining both local and global perspectives, and proposed solutions and social actions within organizations or social media. Participants created an Instagram profile (@alertdesert) that simply conveys the most important information, conclusions, and interesting facts about desertification. This profile was created by the entire group of participants and will be continued and developed in future editions of the project. By organizing the project in the Sahara, a semi-desert and desert area, participants had the opportunity to see environmental changes, climate conditions, and the lifestyle of people living in these areas firsthand. This experience was a practical geography lesson and promoted civic engagement, encouraging actions to prevent desertification and address related environmental and climate challenges. Participation in various educational activities during the project allowed participants to expand their knowledge, exchange ideas, and develop a deeper understanding of the problems affecting us all. In the long term, the project's vision was to engage participants in environmental protection initiatives and collaborate with organizations to share experiences, raise local awareness, and promote sustainable actions. Thanks to the project's perfectly chosen location, participants could observe the hardships of daily life in desert areas and understand the solutions and strategies used there to protect water resources and prevent desertification. This allowed participants to see the effects of this phenomenon, facilitating their understanding of the problem of desertification and fostering creative approaches to proposals and solutions. Visits to Nefta and Tozeur, the museum/cultural center, natural history park, date palm plantations, oases, and the Sahara helped them understand life in Tunisia, its history, local problems, but above all, to learn about life in desert areas and comprehend the complex theoretical phenomena and hydrological methods used in desert areas. Participants also had the chance to talk with the local community, including young people. People with fewer opportunities received appropriate support throughout the project. We enabled all participants to take action at the local level, from finding community initiatives to organizing small events related to the project topic in their local communities. The project contributed to raising awareness, knowledge, and stimulating participants to reflect, which led to subsequent changes in self-awareness about the problem.
