Objectives

As PA Poland, after the events on the eastern border of the EU in 2021 and 2022, we noticed the urgent need of promoting rights of migrants and refugees. By project “Visuals4Migration” we wanted to tackle the the issues of migration, human rights and the culture of peace that are particularly relevant at the present time. The rapid increase in migratory movements from Belarus and Ukraine through Poland created new challenges. Poland, a country that has faced a sudden influx of migrants and refugees, provided a promising social background for projects aimed at disarming disinformation about refugees and migration. Other European countries were struggling with similar realities - therefore we wanted to create a space where we could together discuss different approaches to the topic of mixed migration. With our experience in projects that uses art and visual communication for a social change, we wanted to promote this medium and explore how to use artistic tools to combat violent narratives towards migrants and refugees. That is why we created the project “Visuals4Migration”. We wanted to equip young people with skills and knowledge to be able to act as active citizens, peacebuilders and human rights activists advocating for the rights of migrants. We also wanted to ensure spaces where young people could get connected with various local stakeholders and act together in shaping peaceful societies. Stakeholders such as policy makers, schools and various civil society organizations are seen as our allies in the advocacy for migrants’ rights. We noticed a need to engage young people into addressing existing challenges to human rights and rights of migrants and refugees. And with this project we wished to create spaces where young people could feel the agency in designing their local communities and youth workers who work with visuals will feel empowered to inspire the others with innovative educational tools. Aim of the project We aimed to equip 30 young youth workers from diverse backgrounds working with visuals or willing to incorporate visual tools in their work with tools of peacebuilding, conflict transformation, NVC, emotional literacy, media and visual literacy and visual communication and to explore topics of mixed migration in order to address European and regional tensions around stigmatisation of migrants and refugees and to create at least 5 follow-up creative transformative actions. Objectives: To explore the concepts of active participation, positive and negative peace, peacebuilding and human rights in context of migration and map its possible violations all over Europe; To understand the importance of visual arts and visual communication in the context of migration and human rights, and as a tool to combat hate speech against people on the move; To get familiar with the topic of migration and situation of refugees and migrants in the partner countries and using this knowledge as a framework for peaceful transformative social actions; To empower youth workers working with visuals to take active role in addressing the mapped human rights and migration issues and to stand up against them by using visual tools; To gather good practices in raising awareness on human rights issues in the context of migrations with use of visual tools; To raise the employability of the participants with the competences of critical thinking, factfulness, digital investigation, deconstructing media manipulations, media and visual literacy and incorporating human rights approach in the creative processes and ethical approach to visual communication; To create space for participants to design and implement at least 5 visual follow-up actions oriented on the topics of migration organised in cooperation with the local authorities and communities; To create with participants the guideline for youth workers who work with visuals and peacebuilders on using artivism as a new educative language for transformative social action; To create a visual testimony of the refugee presence on the eastern borders of Poland and create a digital gallery and physical exhibition in Poland.
