Despite all the technological and scientific developments in the world today, profound inequalities and dichotomies continue to exist in society. A clear example of this is the urban-rural opposition, in which there is a clear "dialectic of opposition between those who have the resources for full social participation and those who are unable to do so due to a lack of the same resources" (Rodrigues, et al.,1999). Markedly traditional and more conservative, rural areas (where around one third of Europeans live) stand out due to the exacerbation of cultural, socio-economic, and geographical problems, such as "isolation, mobility problems, fewer opportunities to access information and to participate in activities which are common to young people from other less marginalized regions" (Cavaco, 2004). In this scenario, desires of exodus and a general feeling of devaluation of the local community and culture often arise" (Cavaco, 2004). Faced with this reality, it is easy to understand that rural areas continue to hinder satisfactory answers to the life expectations of young people. For all their context, challenges, and obstacles they face daily, young people from rural areas tend to be more unmotivated, less interactive, proactive, and dynamic, and thus less participative in society (social problem to be solved). Thus, the ambition of Sementes de Esperança and the rest of the consortium to implement this project arises: we want to bring together young people from different geographical contexts, with a focus on young people from rural areas, offering them a non-formal learning opportunity where they can develop their competences, activate their critical mass and entrepreneurial spirit and explore different perspectives and mechanisms, always for the sake of a more active participation in society and in building a bright future. With this project, we gave young people the opportunity to "learn and learn other messages about rural areas, namely their potential and possibilities and the valorization of the cultural identities of rural territories." (Cavaco, 2004). As objectives of the project, we highlight: . General objective: .. To cultivate the promotion of a culture of citizen participation among young people (particularly those coming from rural areas). . Specific objectives: To fulfil the general objective, we implemented the project YOUNG & RURAL, in which we: .. Promoted inclusive opportunities for young people, breaking down barriers to participation and making all young people capable of being agents of change; .. Promoted the development of key competences in young people, making them more critical, enterprising, motivated and available to actively participate in the construction of their future (and of the territory itself); .. Empowered, involved, and connected young people with each other and with the community in order to build a cohesive and sustainable future. The work developed with these young people was a fundamental journey for them and for the local territory. With young people more aware of the need to get involved in a serious, dynamic and creative way in the community (local, regional, national and international) and better able to do so, we are sure that this project contributed to overcome adversities and constraints in the youth sector; to awaken in other young people their entrepreneurial sense and their desire to get actively involved in local dynamics; encourage the creation of life projects for young people; create dynamism in the territory.
