Objectives

The project aimed to address environmental issues through interactive activities based on Non-Formal Education methods and achieve reconnection with nature while focusing on the reality of the trash and its way to the ocean, the most vital ecosystem on Earth, which provides food and oxygen to the majority of life on the planet and regulates our climate, among many other benefits. Currently, in the ocean, there is so much plastic in a form that we can’t get to it; we can’t filter the entire ocean. For example, according to unep.org, it is estimated that 75 to 199 million tonnes of plastic are currently found in our oceans. By mobilising citizens within their local communities and motivating them to be active result in rigorous knowledge of the problems and possible solutions for the future of our planet. The project combined different activities with clean-up campaigns to raise awareness about pressing environmental matters by supporting participants in gaining knowledge and understanding of the origin of different types of trash according to different areas and other parameters like population, density and closeness to the city or the ocean. At the end of the project, the participants and the local community realised that trash travels and doesn’t just simply disappear. They also acknowledged that they had become very used to seeing trash everywhere and no longer paying attention to it. The activities, especially the clean-up campaigns, were eye-openers for them, realising the harsh reality and realising it was time to shift our focus on what we consume and how we treat our waste. The objectives of this project were: - Raise awareness of the environmental impact that human waste is having not only on us but on our wildlife and wilderness areas as well; - Address environmental issues whilst empowering participants with the knowledge and skills to explore different ways to help the environment responsibly; - Empowering the participants with a hands-on approach to effectively collect and analyse waste from different areas and make a positive impact; - Demonstrating that reconnection with nature is essential and beneficial; - Provide tools and strategies to do clean-ups within their community; - Stimulate confidence to identify areas in their countries and create their initiatives; - Develop participants’ skills and competences and problem-solving abilities through the usage of non-formal education methods; - Learn about the main concepts of the Circular Economy.
