Objectives

There are many current priorities and strategies at European and international level that aim to unite the efforts of communities and young people in favour of mutual development. On the one hand, although there seem to be more initiatives designed to involve young people, on the other hand, it seems that this group is not letting itself be involved. We wonder why. We believe that one of the major flaws is that the initiatives created are geared towards young people, but do not include the group itself in their genesis. Now, if the initiatives generated fail to adjust to young people's needs, objectives, expectations and ambitions, youth participation will certainly be limited. When we analyse Eurostat data on the reasons for young people (16-29) not taking part in cultural and sporting activities (non-formal and informal) in Portugal, 37.1% cite lack of interest as the reason. If we want young people to be an active and committed part of change, the first step is to involve them in decision-making, in the construction of initiatives and in effective participation, letting them benefit from the whole process. As the Lisbon Youth Centre's report "An Open Door to Europe and the World" (2017) points out, "Political institutions and young people are not speaking the same language". If young people don't get involved in participation and the social and civic sphere, they will fall into scenarios of widespread exclusion: they will have little presence and no social and community ties, leading to scenarios of social exclusion; poor interaction and networking and experiences will make young people less resilient and with more limited skills (especially in the non-formal and informal field), diminishing their value and potential for the labour market; with unstable jobs, they will have an impact on their financial balance and the construction of their life project. This is why the YOU(TH)R GOALS project was created. We want to work with young people to empower them, involve them and connect them with and for the community, developing skills and tools for active and critical social and civic participation. To do this, we will focus on the Youth Goals, so that young people recognise the youth action plan, get involved and link them to their own personal goals (Your Goals). OBJECTIVES In light of the above, we have set ourselves the following objectives for the YOU(TH)R GOALS project: 1. General Social inclusion of young people in all spheres of society by promoting opportunities for youth participation. 2. Specific - To empower, connect and involve young people with each other, with their community and with the European community; - Promote the development of key competences for lifelong learning and, consequently, foster change towards more proactive, participatory and critical behaviour; - Create spaces for youth participation, where young people can be part of decision-making processes, express their vision and opinion, share, learn and define solutions; - Create non-formal and innovative spaces for youth participation, using complementary means (physical and digital), with a view to empowering young people; - Promote the recognition and appreciation of European social values and principles, as well as youth strategies and priorities.
