Objectives

Over the past three years, young people have been exposed to traumatic events, leading to a significant increase in the number of young individuals experiencing mental disorders (OECD, 2021). The situation has only exacerbated with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, followed by the conflict in Ukraine. Eurostat reports negative trends among young people since the beginning of 2021, including increased drug and alcohol use, self-harm, and suicidal attempts. These challenges have been fueled by disinformation, concerns about future insecurity, physical inactivity, eating and sleeping disorders, as well as addictions to video games and online gambling, among other substances. Addressing these pressing social issues requires time and concerted efforts. Recognizing the urgency, we, in collaboration with our partner organizations, conducted a thorough analysis of the common needs in our youth work. Consequently, we initiated a project aimed at preventing young people from falling into high-risk situations. We firmly believe that prevention is the most effective approach. To achieve this objective, we outlined specific goals to enhance the knowledge and skills of 30 participants including leaders and young individuals, in the areas of stress management, well-being, and mindfulness. Our approach is rooted in non-formal education methods, designed to steer young people away from harmful habits and social risks. We anticipate that the outcomes of our project to empower young people in our local communities to become more resilient in the face of crises, such as war, natural disasters, migration, epidemics, economic downturns, and the spread of misinformation. Our project aligns with the objectives of EU Youth Strategies, with a particular focus on promoting mental health, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles. Additionally, we aim to prevent and address issues related to injuries, eating disorders, addictions, and substance abuse. Our initiative seeks to proactively address the pressing challenges faced by young people in today's complex world. We are committed to nurturing a generation of individuals who are better equipped to navigate adversity and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
